On the first floor, this space has been fully refurbished with new flooring, decoration and lighting and includes a walk-in storage area. With cosmetic dentistry and Beauty by Rebekah already in our building, the room may suit a wellbeing orientated business and is large enough for use as a therapy room or for classes.

The building has secure entry and shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. There is free, unlimited on-street parking in the surrounding area.

What happens during an examination?

The key to offering good dentistry starts with a thorough examination. We follow a step-by-step process:
1. Meet the patient, listen to their chief concerns, review the medical history and decide which X-Rays are needed. At this stage we may take photos of the teeth.
2. Thoroughly examine the jaw joint, looking at range of motion, the muscles which move the lower jaw and joint health.
3. Check the soft lining of the mouth for oral cancer, examine gum health and examine each tooth in turn.

During the exam we try and involve the patient and educate them as to what is stable and unstable.

Our aim is give the patient the best treatment possible with the least amount of dentistry.

Toothpaste for sensitivity?

One of the main causes of tooth sensitivity is receding gums. When this happens a small part of the root of the tooth becomes uncovered and it is this which reacts to hot and cold causing discomfort. I find the best toothpastes to give rapid relief are either Sensodyne Repair and Protect or Sensodyne Complete Protection. When the sensitivity reduces I then recommend Oral B Pro-Expert for long term use.

TMJ

TMJ- this stands for Tempero-mandibular joint. This joint is just in front of your ear and connects your lower jaw to your upper jaw and is the most complex joint in the body. I believe that it should also stand for Teeth, Muscles, Joint as these structures are interdependent. In some people, closing the teeth together can cause their jaw joints to displace. Over a period of time this can either cause their joints to click, tooth wear or sore muscles (leading to headaches) or all three! You may not have any symptoms but early signs of TMJ problems can be picked up during a dental examination before a problem arises- remember that prevention is better than cure! If you are concerned about any of these issues then we can help.

Study suggests that regular check ups reduce major tooth loss.

Regular exams are an important element of preventative dental care.
A Swedish study published this year showed that long-term routine dental attendance throughout middle and early older age reduced major tooth loss across time supporting the principle of encouraging routine dental checkups.

Electric or Manual Toothbrushes?

Tooth decay and gum disease are two of the commonest, but preventable diseases known to man. Regular and effective toothbrushing play an important role in the prevention of these diseases. A recent review of clinical studies has shown that electric toothbrushes reduce plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushing in the short and long term. At Harrogate Spa Dental we normally recommend electric toothbrushes by Oral B.
